BungeeBones produces, manages, and distributes its web directory for installation on other websites. Our goal is to create a network of webmasters using the distributed directory and to pool the web traffic that is leaving their websites and either exchange it or market it on their behalf with our other websites. The BungeeBones directory widget system provides a method for ever increasing exposure of a website's link as more and more webmasters add the directory widget (and thus the link) to more and more sites.
As the amount
of web traffic into the directory increases from these distributed directory locations so too does the competition among webmasters to get their link into the most
prominent position. Needless to say, overcrowding of those locations is certain to occur and overcrowding of a category is in no one's
best interest.
The potential problem of category overcrowding was addressed by the designer of the BungeeBones system from the start. The system was built so that, even though the competition for the popular categories may heta up, webmasters could always find a free (and maybe even more specific and relevant) category to place their link into. Free links always come with the condition that they may have to move their link or be willing to have it moved at some time in the future.
A major goal of the BungeeBones' designers was to provide incentives
for webmasters to manage the placement of their own links into the most relevant
category for their site.
One incentive that naturally gets them to want to move
is overcrowding.
The other incentive is for them to start having to pay for something
that they once received for free. We accomplish that with an auction system that easily transitions overpopulated categories from free ones to paid ones.
We have initially set up a threshold population goal within any of our categories of twenty links. At some future time after a category reaches twenty links we will initiate an auction. During that short transitional we will be moving the category towards becoming a "Paid Link Only" category.

In many cases it would not be of a large enough volume to warrant attempting to market it anyway. By pooling the traffic together it becomes marketable.
